is the ambassador to the u.n. she has been mentioned as a possible replacement for hillary clinton as secretary of state. republican senators john mccain, lindsey graham, they have already said no way, they will hold up her confirmation because of benghazi and comments made days afterwards explaining the attacks. at the time, she said it could have been because of this anti-muslim movie, as we said, but now that's sort of been disproved. i guess the question is -- well, first, listen to. this then i want to ask you -- listen to some of the sound that we have from obama and mccain this week. >> if senator mccain and senator graham and others want to go after somebody, they should go after me. and i'm happy to have that discussion with them. but for them to go after the u.n. ambassador who had nothing to do with benghazi and was simply making a presentation based on intelligence that she had received, and to besmirch her reputation is outrageous. >> that statement is really remarkable in that if the president thinks that we are picking on people, he really does not have any idea of how serious th

ambassador to the u.n. what about what's going on in the u.n. this week? with the palestinians looking to have their status -- there's an entire agenda. the idea that we're focusing on one set of talking points is ridiculous. >> i know you to be a pretty nonpartisan guy, do you smell anything fishy with this benghazi investigation or the way it was handled? do you sense any incompetence? because if you talk to john mccain or lindsey graham, you ask the question, are we talking about a cover-up or general inconfidence? >> the idea was, why did they turn down the all the added security? why did the ambassador go without adequate security? that's a real issue. why were these decisions made? the question, then, of the talking points, what did the cia provide, why was the intelligence community late in apparently getting the points right? it's not the first time we've seen things like that. it's worth looking at. but the idea that a month later, we're still focusing on this rather than basic questions of foreign policy on how to deal with terrorism in these areas. seems to me we are missing

mccain is softening his attacks on u.n. ambassador susan rice after vowing to block her potential nomination as secretary of state. republicans claim ambassador rice deliberately misled the country in the aftermath of the september 11th attack on the u.s. consulate in benghazi. but rice says that she's not to blame, arguing she relied on the talking points from the intelligence community. although mccain had threatened a senate filibuster earlier this month, he's now open to meeting directly with miss rice. >> is there anything that ambassador rice can do to change your mind about it? >> sure. she can -- i give everyone the benefit of explaining their position and the actions that they took. and i'll be glad to have the opportunity to discuss these issues with her. >> she could conceivably get your vote for secretary of state? >> i think she deserves the ability and the opportunity to explain herself and her position. >> the white house says no decisions have been made as far as cabinet selections for the president's second term. and john heilemann, part of what you wrote about th

officials, however important to note that the u.n. secretary-general is coming here tomorrow and a delegation of arab league foreign ministers is going to where you are in gaza. potentially this diplomacy might continue to play out over next 24 hours. i'm told by an israeli government official that they hope that the diplomatic tribe will prove successful. they're continuing with the military preparations as well. they call it the trigger is called -- they're ready to pull it if the diplomacy doesn't work and this evening, in fact, one official said that perhaps they might have to show the sword more clearly in order to energize the diplomacy. so you can see there is a lot of impetus happening, people want the diplomacy to work, we are just not sure whether it is even though we hear from the palestinian side that they are working very seriously and they are really wanting to have a cease-fire and egyptians are doing that work. anderson? >> christiane, is it clear at all at this point, and it may not be, what the parameters of any kind of cease-fire would be? >> well from the
